At the end of Deer Valley Unified School District\u2019s governing board meeting Tuesday night, a longtime board member gave a Nazi salute, punctuating it with the word \u201cheil.\u201d A colleague is now calling for her censure.<\/p>\n

Far-right board member Kim Fisher is under fire for the Nazi gesture she performed after a spat with board president Paul Carver over the scheduling of a board work study session. With her bag already in her lap at the tail end of the more-than-two-hour-long meeting, Fisher wanted to move an upcoming work-study session from Tuesday to Saturday, arguing that community members couldn\u2019t make the current date. Carver shut her down, arguing that \u201ceverything wants things, but nobody gives specifics\u201d before adjourning the meeting following some back and forth.<\/p>\n

Seemingly in protest of Carver, Fisher raised her right arm with a flattened hand at a 45-degree angle from her shoulder before saying \u201cheil, heil,\u201d in the direction of Carver, a fellow Republican. The gesture initially sparked little visible reaction from the board\u2019s six other members, as little discussion continued before the members began to pack up their things.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In a Facebook Live video filmed after the meeting, Fischer called Carver a \u201cdictator\u201d several times, adding that he was \u201chorrible, beyond horrible\u201d and that the \u201cboard is not functional anymore.\u201d Fisher didn\u2019t apologize for her Nazi salute; instead, she doubled down because Carver was \u201cbehaving like a dictator\u201d and \u201call I could think of was Hitler, so I said, \u2018Heil\u2019 or whatever, \u201d she said in the video. Fisher did not respond to a request for comment from Phoenix New Times.<\/p>\n

In a statement on Thursday morning, fellow Deer Valley board member Stephanie Simacek, who was sitting right next to Fisher at the time of the salute, called for the \u201cimmediate censure\u201d of Fisher over what Simacek said was antisemitic behavior.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened in that room was not a joke,\u201d Simacek wrote. \u201cIt was not a political statement or an expression of frustration. It was a deliberate invocation of one of the most evil ideologies in human history on display in a building where our children come to learn.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is what antisemitism looks like when people get comfortable. This is what hatred looks like when it finds a seat at the table.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a phone interview with New Times, Carver said Fisher\u2019s behavior \u201cborders on hate crime.\u201d He said that he doesn\u2019t know if she\u2019s an antisemite or if \u201cshe just hates people,\u201d noting that she\u2019s attacked his religious beliefs before.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a line that should have never been crossed,\u201d Carver said. \u201cI don\u2019t know where her head was at.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Deer Valley board oversees 42 schools and more than 32,000 students throughout north Phoenix, Glendale, Peoria, Anthem, New River and Queen Creek, according to the district\u2019s website. Fisher initially joined the board in 2014. Her current term ends in January 2029.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In a statement, the Deer Valley School District wrote that it does \u201cnot condone, support, or endorse gestures or language associated with hate, discrimination, intimidation or violence of any form.\u201d It added that \u201cas an elected official, Mrs. Fisher speaks and acts independently. Her views and actions do not reflect those of the district.\u201d<\/p>\n

Simacek, a Democrat who also serves in the Arizona House of Representatives, told New Times in a phone interview that she expects a potential recall effort or attempt to oust Fisher from the board, though she acknowledged that would be \u201cextremely difficult\u201d to accomplish. Simacek called Fisher\u2019s actions \u201cabove and beyond inappropriate,\u201d adding that there\u2019s \u201cabsolutely no reason for her to be referring to him as a dictator.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s completely blown that out of proportion. There\u2019s no excuse for her behavior,\u201d Simack said, adding that she didn\u2019t speak to Fisher after the meeting as \u201cthe best thing I\u2019ve found with her is to not engage.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Similarly, Carver told New Times that \u201cthe unfortunate part is that it didn\u2019t surprise me because she says and does the most outlandish and ridiculous things at the drop of a hat all the time,\u201d he said. \u201cWe didn\u2019t engage because to engage Mrs. Fisher just gives fuel to the fire.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

None of the other board members responded to requests for comment.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t the first time Fisher has made headlines. In 2017, she got herself into hot water after calling a teacher an \u201cAnti-American Trump-hating troll\u201d and using profanity against him on social media. Fisher didn\u2019t back down and stood by her actions in that incident.<\/p>\n

Simacek said she was motivated to run for her board seat in 2022 as a result of Fisher\u2019s inappropriate behavior.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe likes to put down our school district while our students are thriving and doing amazing things,\u201d Simacek said of Fisher. \u201cShe likes to put down the superintendent and the president \u2014 anyone who dares challenge her.\u201d<\/p>\n
