Nick Kupper, a freshman GOP state representative from the West Valley, committed that blunder Tuesday night. Earlier that day, Democratic state Rep. Anna Abeytia brought her two-week-old baby into the Arizona House of Representatives so she could participate in a vote. The Arizona House Democrats account tweeted a photo of mother and child, with the caption: \u201cRep. Anna Abeytia proving moms always make it happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then Kupper weighed in.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is wonderful to see a mother caring for her kids,\u201d Kupper wrote in a quote-tweet of the photo. \u201cHowever, it would have been wonderful if all of her kids had been given the same opportunity at life. Abortion is hideous.\u201d<\/p>\n

The post, as well as several replies Kupper made to people offended by it, has since been deleted. In one of the deleted replies, Kupper argued that because Abeytia had previously discussed having had an abortion on the House floor, that incredibly personal chapter of her life was fair game for comment.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe made it public & now the House Dem page wants to highlight her as a mother who takes care of her kids,\u201d Kupper wrote in one reply. \u201cIf they take their post down then I\u2019ll take mine down. I didn\u2019t condemn her, I condemned abortion.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a reply to Democratic state Rep. Quant\u00e1 Crews, Kupper said Abeytia\u2019s abortion disclosure meant \u201cit is my business now,\u201d going on to write: \u201cYour party, as a whole, celebrates abortion, but somehow I\u2019m not allowed to talk about it?\u201d<\/p>\n

Kupper was referring to comments Abeytia gave last year when speaking on the House floor against a bill that would have restricted abortion. (The bill ultimately failed.) In her remarks, she talked about a recent abortion she\u2019d had and said that decisions like the one she made weren\u2019t the concern of the state\u2019s legislature.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI find this legislation disrespectful to people like myself to make those decisions for my own body and for my family,\u201d she said at the time.<\/p>\n

Abeytia did not specify the reason she had an abortion. Though Kupper cast the decision in a capricious light, many women seek abortions for reasons to do with their own health or the health of the fetus.<\/p>\n

In an emailed response to Phoenix New Times, Kupper said that he spoke with Abeytia by phone Tuesday night and she asked him to remove his post.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI honored that request and told her I won\u2019t speak of her online at all anymore,\u201d he wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Abeytia did not respond to requests for comment for this story.<\/p>\n

Arizona voters added the right to abortion to the state constitution in 2024, with more than 60% of voters casting ballots in favor. Kupper said he respects that and will uphold it, though \u201cthat does not mean that I have to morally agree with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nonetheless, Republican legislators have spent much of the past two sessions attempting to pass abortion restrictions that the new abortion access amendment clearly prohibits.<\/p>\n

On social media, Democrats immediately condemned Kupper for commenting on a colleague\u2019s abortion history, with varying degrees of restraint.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re a piece of shit,\u201d state Sen. Analise Ortiz responded. \u201cRep. Abeytia is an incredible mom who\u2019s bravely shared her story to make it clear that the government has NO right to control how we grow our families. Can\u2019t wait until you\u2019re sent to the dustbin of irrelevant former politicians where you belong.\u201d Ortiz then called him a coward for deleting his post and the subsequent responses.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Democratic state Rep. Nancy Gutierrez also came to Abeytia\u2019s defense, condemning Kupper and calling him a hypocrite. Abeytia gave up maternity leave to vote, Gutierrez wrote on Instagram in a post that included a screenshot of Kupper\u2019s original tweet. She added that GOP leadership tried to make her leave her baby when she went to vote.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you think these people value families, you\u2019re wrong,\u201d Gutierrez wrote. \u201cThis is a vile post and should not be tolerated.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an interview with New Times, Gutierrez said Kupper was \u201cout of line\u201d and has not apologized.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is legal to get an abortion,\u201d she said. \u201cHis opinion does not matter to any of us, and he needs to keep it to himself.\u201d<\/p>\n
